Leadership Looks A Little Different These Days

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6: Always have a plan, but test it frequently

Change leaders have a plan, whether you know it or not.

While effective leaders of change may appear incredibly flexible to others, internally they typically have very strong opinions of how to get from point A to point B. They have listened, they have taken into account the details and the longer-term vision, and have spent time listening to and considering perspectives from those with different perspectives.

You will often find leaders who lead through change well frequently having conversations with others. This helps them not only gain insight from others, but communicate their perspective to others and test their plan on a small scale. They communicate their perspective to others frequently in order to solicit feedback and gain alignment on an individual level first.

Many times, these connections are simply being respectful, particularly if individuals have a vested interest in the project or organization. Change doesn’t happen in isolation, and these connections allow others time to think about what the upcoming change will mean for them.

There is no better example of this than Jesus Himself. He spoke in parables, in stories that allowed Him to share Kingdom principles that his followers and the crowds simply weren’t ready for. Many times, He shared more than one story on the same Kingdom principle to reveal another aspect of God’s plan and purpose.

Jesus taught in progressive steps and on purpose. He revealed information and knowledge when others were able to understand it. For some of His followers, that meant that they needed to learn by experience (think of Peter denying Jesus three times leading up to Jesus’ death, and subsequent restoration). For others, it was the demonstration of a miracle.

Jesus knew each person, how they thought, how they processed information, and what they valued. He connected with them on a level where they were at, but never changed His plan. He adjusted His style to meet them where they were. Jesus also left us with God’s Spirit, who continually reveals new truths and insights to guide and equip us.

God, help me to develop an outside-in perspective. Help me understand how to meet people where they are at, and be able to adapt my thoughts and plans to communicate well with others. Keep me flexible when I need to be flexible, and strong when I need to be strong. Give me the creativity in storytelling that only comes from you. You know the hearts of your people better than I do. Help me be sensitive to your leading as I communicate the vision and plans you have put on my heart.
