In plant life, this makes a ton of sense, right? Things connected to the vine grow and stay useful. Branches, however, that fall to the ground become dead and are no longer useful to the vine. Is the same really true for you and me?
Think about it this way: If your life doesn’t really depend on Jesus, then why bother being a disciple in the first place?
We are tempted at times to think and live with a mentality that says, “I got this,” or “I am better on my own.” Jesus knew that way of living doesn’t work, and challenged us with such strong visuals to remind us that with Him we can be fully alive, but without Him we are just a dead stick.
Which one are you today? A branch connected and dependent on Jesus, or a dead stick on the ground who really doesn’t see the daily need for Jesus?
