Creating a Better Normal

DAY 6 OF 7

Vulnerability Is a Strength

Often, when we struggle with something, we don’t like admitting it to others. But being a Jesus follower means admitting that we can’t handle everything on our own. We need to surrender our burdens to God, but we also need to let others carry them, too.

Pastor Craig Groeschel often says it this way, “We may impress others with our strengths, but we connect with others in our weaknesses.” The fear is that being vulnerable will ruin your friendship. The fact is that it often strengthens it. When we choose to bravely be vulnerable with someone or a group of people, we give them permission to be vulnerable with us, too.

Here’s what Paul wrote about weakness and vulnerability:

… So now I am glad to boast about my weakness, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses … for when I am weak, then I am strong. 1 Corinthians 12:9-10 NLT

When we’re honest about our weakness, we allow God’s strength to be made perfect. And we invite others to see God’s power at work within us.

Vulnerability is often the gateway from a shallow friendship to a deep relationship. We’re not just vulnerable to anyone who will listen, though. We share what’s on our hearts with the people who are closest to us, knowing that they can help us process it and discover what’s true in the situation.

So let’s create a better normal for our relationships this season. Let’s stop settling for shallow answers and mediocre conversations. Instead, let’s allow people more access into our lives, knowing that God will be faithful to be with us when we go there.

Pray: God, thank You for being strong in my weakness. It’s hard for me to be vulnerable with You and with others in my life. Help me change that, Father. Give me the wisdom to know who to be vulnerable with and the courage to do so. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge: Have a conversation with someone you care about, letting them in on more than surface-level answers.
