Five Days of Jesus’ Names

DAY 1 OF 5

Immanuel: God Is With You

The name Immanuel is not merely a name to remember during Christmas as we sing carols and drink hot chocolate. It is a name of comfort when times are at their worst.

Jesus as Immanuel means that no matter what you have gone through or are going through, God is with you. The birth of Jesus Christ is not only the introduction of our Savior into this world. It is also the introduction of God’s promise of victory and His presence in the midst of a painful reality we all know far too often.

Jesus has come that we may know God more fully and experience His power more completely as He deals with our sins and our circumstances.

So, when we talk about Jesus as Immanuel, we are talking about God Himself. We are not just talking about a man who lived and died on earth. He is God in the flesh, and He really is with you.

Additional study:

1. Read Hebrews 10:5-7. In verse 5, the author uses the order “sacrifices and offerings.” In verse 6, he uses the order, “offerings and sacrifices.” Describe the difference between the first order and the second order? Why was it necessary that God become a sinless man in order to satisfy the demands of the first order of sacrifices completely?

2. Read Isaiah 9:6 and Galatians 4:4. What is the difference between being “born” and being “given” (Isaiah 9:6) and begin “born” and “sent” (Galatians 4:4)? Why do you think this distinction is made in these verses?
