There's Hope For Today

DAY 337 OF 366

It is a mild evening at your house when a knock comes on the door. Looking through the peephole you see a face – strangely familiar. You open the door to find that familiar face flanked by a cameraman and an assistant carrying a stuffed folio … and it hits you – that face – you know that face – it’s Scott Pelley from 60 Minutes! Your eyes dart wildly to the assistant who you realize is no assistant at all, it’s Lesley Stahl, another 60 Minutes investigative reporter! Scott Pelley is saying something but it sounds like a dull roar because your eyes are fixed on the folio – that stuffed folio – and you know … it’s your whole life and you’re about to be exposed. Investigators expose things. They dig, sift, sort and find the truth. They put it all in the file … the glossy prints … the sound recordings … DNA. You have no doubt that when the gavel falls, you will be convicted. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would come to convict the world of sin, and it is at this point that this 60 Minutes metaphor breaks down. The Holy Spirit does indeed come to expose the truth and challenge our wayward hearts, but the Holy Spirit is not punitive. The Holy Spirit comes with conviction that leads us to the cross – to Christ – to life!
