He was a “sloppy sower,” this farmer who went out to sow his seed. It seems that he took no care to target his seed on the best soil. Seed fell on the path, seed fell on the rocky places, seed fell on shallow soil, and seed fell among thorns. The farmer didn’t care much for detail work. He knew what he could, and what he couldn’t do. He could not command the rains, therefore, he could not make the seed germinate. He could not command the sun, therefore, he could not command the crop to grow. He could not guarantee the measure of the yield, therefore, he adopts a wise strategy of maximum coverage.

A “detail guy” might avoid the more obvious dead zones, but the farmer didn’t want to lose the grain that grew tall on the edges of the path. The targeted planner might avoid the rocky places, but the farmer knew that there was a small harvest to be gleaned in the clefts of the rocks – and the farmer survived on that margin.

The parable speaks loud and clear to the sowers of God’s life-giving seed: SOW IT EVERYWHERE! God’s great plan for a spiritual harvest demands that every man be given the opportunity to receive the seed. He will give the increase, if we will scatter the seed – EVERYWHERE.
