DAY 199 OF 366

Complexity has found a new showplace – the coffee shop.

It used to be that you ordered coffee black, or with sugar and cream. Decaffeinated coffee brought the first major subdivision in “Javaland.” Now, we are awash in options. Large or small has been replaced with tall, grande, venti, double-cupped, triple-shotted art forms. Espresso, Latte, Macchiato, Mocha, and Americano have broadened the field. “What will it be this morning?” asks the girl with twelve tattoos. “I’ll have a triple-venti-half-caf-skim-vanilla-sweet-n-low-wet-latte,” I say. My morning creation gurgles and sputters to life – all steam and foam. “Four-fifty,” she says. “Would you like to try soy instead of milk?” I shake my head as I pay the ransom demanded for my caffeine fix.

Soy! What next – designer colors? God could have made redemption a complex maze of prerequisites, but He made it simple enough for a child to grasp. False religions take their pilgrims through intricate levels and stages.

God points us to the cross. Christianity is not complex. Come as a child. Take what is freely offered. Trust God. Follow the plan. When in doubt – be like Jesus.
