[Certainty In The Uncertainty] Staying Still In Times Of Crisis Sample

Be Still And Know

Stillness deepens our hearts and our lives. The certainty in the midst of uncertainty comes when we get still before the Lord and we say, “Okay, God. I am going to be still to know that You are God.” Sometimes our activity gives us the false idea that we are God, that we are the mover and shaker who will change things. However, when we are still, we learn the Mover and Shaker is the Lord; He is the one.

When we go to sleep, we are still. God is still moving; He is still on His throne. We learn to trust the Lord by going to sleep every night. When we worry, we have trouble sleeping, because we are trying to actively solve a problem while lying on our beds. Yet God keeps telling us to “Be still and know that I am God.”

Stillness deepens our relationship with God. It deepens our knowledge of Him: who He is, what He does, and what He is able to do. Stillness before the Lord can do something great in our lives because it allows us to understand what we are really going through. Stillness gives us an opportunity to ask the question, “Why?” It can help us discover what we are feeling and what we are going through. Psalm 42:5 says, “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” When we know who God is, we can ask these questions and have an answer in Him. 

When we are still we get to know who God is. We get to hear His voice. We need to make time to know Him and hear His voice. We must put down our phones and tablets, turn off our TVs, stop our activities, and stay still, quiet, to be able to hear the gentle whisper of His voice. 1 Kings 19:11–12 says, “The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” The Lord’s voice was in that whisper. 

We should know that God is God over our pain. He is God over our pleasure. He is God over our activity and over our rest. God can do great things and we, in our stillness, will know that He is God. “Be still, and know that I am God.”
