Samuel — Prophet and LeaderSample

Samuel — Prophet and Leader

DAY 14 OF 15

Samuel as a Mentor

David is anointed as king, but Saul is not at all pleased with that. He tries to kill David. David flees in order to escape, and he needs a place to stay and some good advice. Therefore, he goes to the old prophet Samuel and stays with him.

That is a wise thing to do. In difficult times, it is very helpful to have a kind of mentor. Someone who has more life experience than you have, who is wise and fears God. Someone with whom you can share your problems, whom you can ask for advice, who could pray for you. Who also could correct or rebuke you if necessary.

Paul was such a mentor to Timothy. It is actually a task of church members to take care of each other in this way: “Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, ESV). Do you belong to a church? Do you know believers there (or somewhere else) who could serve as your “father or mother in the faith”?

About this Plan

Samuel — Prophet and Leader

In the first centuries of their existence as a people, the Israelites had no king. Instead, God appointed prophets and judges to lead them. The last prophet-judge was Samuel. He was a faithful leader who wanted to serve the Lord and to seek the best for his people. This reading plan takes you through Samuel’s life in 15 days and contains valuable lessons that are still relevant today.
