1 Corinthians: A 35-Day Reading PlanSample
God Cares About Your Sex Life
Watch any sitcom featuring a married couple talking about sex, and you will hear of husbands wanting sex, but not getting it, or wives withholding sex to get something they want. These scenarios might make for funny television, but they don’t make for strong happy marriages.
1 Corinthians 7:1-9 reminds us of God’s plan for sex. God designed sex to be a unique love language spoken between husband and wife. It’s a way they know each other unlike anyone else. It’s a time to close the door to the world and seek to please only each other.
God’s best plans always ask us to put others ahead of ourselves.
God’s best plans always ask us to put others ahead of ourselves. Great sex doesn’t happen with a me-first attitude. It is the result of seeking to meet our spouse’s needs. Withholding sex for power turns what God created for good into a weapon and makes our love life a war zone.
Keeping sex a priority in marriage strengthens a couple’s bond and helps protect against temptation. When husbands and wives put each other’s needs above their own, it keeps selfishness out and makes for the best sex life.
Reflect:
- If you are married, what is one step you can take today to put your spouse first in your sexual relationship?
- If you are single, is there anything you need to stop doing or start doing today to set you up for a healthy sexual relationship with your potential future spouse?

About this Plan
The apostle Paul wrote 1 Corinthians to a church divided over all kinds of issues. He answers questions about sex and relationships, how to know good leaders from bad ones, and what to expect during a church gathering. This letter reminds us that God’s design for the church is unity, not uniformity. Part of the church’s strength comes from the unique experiences, gifts, and abilities we bring to it.
