The Prayer of Agur: A 5-Day Devotional by Jay PayleitnerSample
Life in the Sweet Spot
Agur offers two powerful prayers: to evade the lies and temptations of this world, and to trust God to provide our daily needs. God’s answers to these two requests should keep us running on a straight track down the middle of the road, not banging off the guardrails.
So, are you living in God’s sweet spot?
It’s quite possible that you still may not recognize the full advantage of living in God’s sweet spot. For one thing, praying the prayer of Agur leads to patience when things aren’t moving fast enough and composure when things get a little out of control. Never forget, the goal is to find that balance between too much and too little.
In God’s sweet spot, the pressure is off. Really. You can be sure it’s all going to work out. You are not required to start a business this year, enroll for school next semester, look for love, or tackle any other ambitious endeavor. But why not go for it? Otherwise, you’re just sitting on the sidelines, and that’s not sweet at all.
An even better thing about living in God’s sweet spot is that you can move forward to explore life, secure in your relationship with the Creator of the universe. When you find yourself panicking over worldly successes or failures, it’s reassuring to know God loves you no matter what. This is true when you’re on a winning streak or when you’re hurting. When you’re seeking His face or turning away. Whether your cup is empty or overflowing. The fact that God loves you just as you are is the truest thing about you.
God isn’t impressed with your Rolex watch, washboard abs, trophy spouse, or even your million-dollar gift to charity.
In much the same way, it’s okay if your lawn has a few dandelions, your car has some rust spots, or you don’t get into Harvard. God is okay with those things, and He wants you to be okay with them, too. The most important thing is for you to live a life that pleases Him.
When you’re living in your sweet spot, the true benefits of Agur’s prayer will become clear. Your boring, narrow, straight-down-the-middle path leads you to your purpose: doing great things and finding joy-filled satisfaction.
Spend some time in prayer today, both listening to God speak to you about changes you need to make and speaking to God about your fears, dreams, and joys.
