Israel Requests a King
Questions to consider:
- What does this passage teach you about God?
- What does this teach you about humanity and the world?
- Why do you think there was a problem with Israel asking for a king?
- Read 8:7. Whom does this verse say Israel is rejecting? How do you see yourself rejecting the kingship of Christ in your life? Spend some time thanking God for his power and control in your life. Confess areas where you are inclined to reject his authority.
- How does this passage point to a true and better King Jesus?
Let’s Pray:
Father, you warn us again and again in scripture against seeking to be ruled by anything or anyone other than you. Thank you for your faithfulness when my heart wanders. Keep me from believing the lie that I can serve more than one king.

About this Plan
Picture this: a nation chosen by God; a prophet from an unlikely background to help show God’s ways to His people; a king whose fear and unfaithfulness bring disaster; and a man after God’s own heart who changed the nation of Israel forever. This is a story of God’s reign and rule, Israel’s choices and consequences, and two men’s different responses to God.
