Screens: Isolation or Interaction?

As parents, we must be aware of any thing that could come in the way of our family’s best interest. The new technologies and digital devices were in many ways intended to enhance our relationships. But is that happening? Is technology pulling your family members together? Do screens promote isolation or interaction within your family?

Do you remember going on car trips with your family? Some families would play games that could spark great conversations. But in today’s world we all get in the car and it is silent because we are just looking at a screen the whole time. 

There are three choices you may consider about screens for your family. They don’t need to happen all at once. 

When do the kids get a cellphone to talk and text? Maybe at 13. When would they get the internet browser on their cellphone? Maybe at 14 or 15. This is when kids could really get in trouble, so consider using an accountability app like Covenant Eyes that can help them not to get in the wrong places. When do they get social media? At 16 you may want to add a couple of approved social media apps.

You can adjust the plan to suit your particular needs as a family. This is only a framework to help you think these things through to build your own team solution, because once you open that door, it will never close again. 

Some parents also make a cellphone contract with their kids. What would this contract say? It doesn’t have to be complicated. This is only a framework to inspire you to come up with your own.

1. I understand that having a cellphone is a privilege. If I fail to adhere to this contract, my cellphone privilege may be revoked.


2. I understand that my cellphone belongs to my parents. They set the rules and determine what is appropriate.


3. I will not be on my phone while my family is spending time together, unless I ask permission. (If we want this to really work, we may consider being an example of this last clause ourselves.)


4. I will not send gossip, rude, or mean texts to others.
