Finding Fulfillment in Work

DAY 5 OF 6

Finding Contentment

What does it mean to be content in your work? In seasons of prosperity, it’s much easier to be content than in seasons of dryness, despair, doubt, and wandering. Although, many people may find the perfect job and still find themselves wanting more. Finding fulfillment in difficult seasons often begins with being content where God has us. It’s important to remember, however, that contentment is not complacency.

In the parable of the talents, a master issues talents (a large sum of money) each to three servants according to their abilities. The servant who receives one talent is afraid to risk that which is given to him by the master, so he does not put his resources to work. The master rebukes him for his laziness.

In this parable, the lazy servant neglects the desires of the master to grow his investment. The servant’s satisfaction with one talent leads him to mismanage his resources. Contentment of this kind can also look like complacency, laziness, or idleness. Faithfully stewarding the gifts God has given us should always motivate us to create as much value as possible to His glory.

In Philippians, the Apostle Paul shares about contentment in a different light. His secret to finding contentment in any situation is to strive to do what God has called him to do. Real contentment is not being satisfied with what we have or where we are in life. It transcends any one situation or job. It is working diligently to glorify God, serve the common good, and further the kingdom of God in everything we do.

A heavenly perspective changes the way we look at our work. With this perspective, it’s possible to find fulfillment in a job that isn’t a perfect fit. Recognizing that you can honor God, work diligently, and serve others no matter what you are doing frees you to look for God’s redemptive story in your life in every season.

Seasons of unemployment or underemployment can make it difficult to feel truly fulfilled. It’s important to remember that fulfillment and satisfaction can come in any job with the right heart and mind focused on God.

Pursuing a God-pleasing posture at work with the help of the Holy Spirit can powerfully change your heart and mind and in turn, change the way you view your work.

Are you content in your job? Are you using your gifts and talents to the best of your ability?
