100% Others (Serve)
Mark Jones
Ready:
“The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.” Genesis 39:2
Set:
While on vacation in Washington D.C., I went out to pick up a quick meal for the family. At the restaurant, a lady started talking to me. She looked troubled and needing someone to stop and care. She asked me for a cup of water, so I took her to the counter and bought her a meal. I wasn’t looking for a chance to do something, just a meal. I wasn’t looking to make a sacrifice in the moment, but it was needed.
Joseph was the favored son of Jacob. When his brothers got sick of him, they sold him to some passing Midianites. Over the next ten plus years, Joseph was in servitude, and even in prison. But, over those ten plus years, Joseph flourished, even while in prison. He flourished because he kept God central to his life, and he served no matter where he was. With all he’d been through, he could have been bitter. But he used his faith to keep serving, and that won the hearts of all those around him no matter where he was.
If God has a true hold of our hearts, we need to be ready to serve in a moment. It could be buying a meal for or talking with someone. It could be a total change of direction of our plans. God wants to love others through us. We need to be ready.
Go:
1. Have you ever had a chance to serve someone at the drop of a hat? What happened?
2. Servings others can be hard sometimes. Why do you think that is?
3. Have you ever had someone serve you? How did you feel in that moment?
Workout:
Genesis 39-41
Overtime:
“Father, Your Son served the people around Him, and even gave His life for them. Help me to be willing to serve another whenever You give me the chance. In His Name, Amen.”
