DAY 3 OF 28

Fulfillment Found!

By Pastor Dan Hickling

“Now there were set there six waterpots of stone . . . Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, ‘Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.’ And they took it.”—John 2:6-8 (NKJV)

We were introduced to a dilemma yesterday. A wedding feast is about to come to a screeching halt as the celebratory wine has just run out. But Jesus is there, and His mother brings the need to His attention, trusting He would have a solution to this problem . . . which He did.

Jesus instructs the servants at the wedding to fill six large waterpots with water. This wasn’t a simple task, it took real commitment on the part of the servants to fulfill them. But they do it, and then Jesus tells them to draw some out and bring it to the master of the feast. What happens next is the very definition of the miraculous: “When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from . . . the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, ‘Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now” (John 2:9-10 NKJV)!

What had been common water just moments before was now wine praised as being of the very highest quality! Not only was the crisis averted, but this wedding would be long remembered for good reasons. But what’s the underlying truth that this miracle points to?

Within God’s Word, we see that wine is representative of joy (Psalm 104:15; Ecclesiastes 9:7). Looking through this lens, we see that Jesus is the One who transforms our ordinary and common lives into lives filled with joy.

If you’ve been brought into a personal relationship with Christ by placing your faith in Him, you know how true this is! Prior to His presence, life was lacking. Even on our best days, there was an inner discontent and longing, because we’re wired for joy and unfulfilled without it. Only Jesus has the power to change this. Only Jesus can transform joylessness into joyfulness . . . and He does for all who open their hearts to Him.

DIG: What truth about Jesus does this miracle point to?

DISCOVER: How does this aspect of Christ relate to your own life?

DO: What would you tell someone seeking fulfillment in life? Look for an opportunity to do so.
