I want to start off by thanking God for His grace. Prior to receiving the revelation of our identity, I wore my daughter’s diagnosis of autism as a badge of honor. My life was consumed by it. It took priority in my life and was dictating our purpose. I even believed that because of it, I finally knew who I was and my purpose, as if autism was my creator. Through spending time with the Holy Spirit, He lovingly told me to shift my focus from living an autism-focused life to living a Jesus-focused life. The truth is, you cannot live by both. God’s heart is to lead you to your rightful place; —who you are, where He is. In order for us to reclaim our identity in Jesus, we have to first reject the identity of autism. In 2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) their definition for autism spectrum disorder is:

“Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability that can cause significant social, communication, and behavioral challenges. There is often nothing about how people with ASD look that sets them apart from other people, but people with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from most other people. The learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities of people with ASD can range from gifted to severely challenged. Some people with ASD need a lot of help in their daily lives; others need less.”

Say no to the identity of autism, and yes to the One who created us, God Almighty! We are not a slave to this definition, but free in Christ.
