Chasing Truth™: Read the Bible Cover to CoverSample
Like an Obedient Child
The psalmist, David, recorded in Psalm 32:8, 9 what the Lord had spoken to his heart. God promised to instruct and guide him in all that he should do in his life. These are God’s words to us as well. He promises that He will give us the counsel we need with His eye on us. How marvelous!
However, God goes on to warn us through this psalm that we should be teachable, leaning into His counsel, not resisting His instruction like a stubborn horse or mule. A stubborn mule must be led through the uncomfortable presence of a bit and bridle, which is sometimes painful. Its master must force the mule to go in the right direction, the bit and bridle pulling it to stay near.
Oh, how I don’t want to be like a mule that is led by force and control. I want to be an obedient child who hears the voice of the Father and goes where He leads, doing what He asks. Psalm 32:10 follows the warning about being like a stubborn mule (in verse 9) with a reminder that the wicked or disobedient will experience many sorrows. However, the one who trusts in the master will experience steadfast love.
Which would you prefer, friend, a forceful hand leading you throughout life, or the joy of trusting your Heavenly Father to lead you in the best ways for the best life?
Take some time to reflect on which example portrays you in your current season: a willful mule, or a trusting child? Ask for His help to walk in His ways and to take joy in the journey as He leads.
