DAY 159 OF 366

A Covenant with God

In this chapter of 2 Samuel, we see King David approaching his own death. He records the last psalm. What could David have been thinking when he knew he would soon come face to face with God?

King David could have recounted many victories. He possibly thought back to slaying the giant Goliath. Maybe he thought of his escape from King Saul, or other military victories. But David realized that good deeds do not gain us entrance into heaven.

Maybe King David was recalling his sins. Perhaps he remembered having Bathsheba brought in to him. Or when he purposely sent Bathsheba’s husband Uriah to the front line of battle and he died. But David would have realized that our sins do not keep us from entering heaven if we have confessed them.

What we know that King David did recall was his everlasting covenant with God. He says in 2 Samuel 23:5 (CSB): “Is it not true my house is with God? For he has established a permanent covenant with me, Ordered and secured in every detail.”

Our covenant was made by Jesus once and for all when He was crucified and resurrected. We are secure in knowing that the work has been completed. David goes on to ask: “Will he not bring about my whole salvation and my every desire?” (verse 5).

Jesus reminded us of this covenant in 1 Corinthians 11:25 (CSB): “In the same way also he took the cup . . . and said, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ ”

We can approach God confidently, knowing that this covenant with Him is secure!
