Burn Your White Flags (Hebrews)Sample
It’s important to have the right rescuer for the right situation.
In a house fire you don’t want a lifeguard turning up in speedos with a floatie! You want a fire-fighter with a heavy tunic and a breathing apparatus and water!
You need someone who’s been equipped and trained to rescue you at that moment.
Jesus is the rescuer we need!
The first readers of Hebrews would have walked past the temple every … single ... day. They would have seen animals being sacrificed and priests performing their duties. The reality of their ‘old way’ of living was right there! They lived with the constant pressure to participate in these old rituals.
So what makes Jesus a better and more suitable Saviour than the old system of dealing with sin?
We see three things from this passage: as a priest, Jesus was appointed by God, familiar with suffering, and most importantly eternal in His ministry.
These qualities make Jesus a qualified high priest and able to offer eternal salvation. His office, His sacrifice, and His ministry are far superior to that of the old covenant. Jesus is the Saviour we need.
What old ways are you tempted to turn back to? Self effort and striving? Religiosity? Box-ticking? Or perhaps to old rituals of ignoring God and running after the world.
All of our efforts of either religiosity or rebellion are attempts at self-justifying. They don't work.
Jesus is the rescuer you need! He is the only one appointed and equipped to save humanity. It’d be crazy for us to walk away from the only One who can save!
