JOSEPH HAD HIS EYES ON THE PRIZE
Before we take a closer look, it might be a good idea for you to familiarise yourself with the whole story of Joseph. Genesis 37-50. You could do this by yourself or in a small group.
During school, I wasn’t the most studious pupil and struggled with the monotonous rituals of assignments being dealt out by teachers and me handing them back in, half completed, 3 days late and barely scrambling a pass (except P.E, I smashed that sucker!). My mindset over the last 2 years was “I cannot wait to get out of this place, get a job, make some money and go travelling.” Until one day, it occurred to me that to make money I needed an education. I needed to be patient and learn whatever I could through school even though I felt trapped and stuck. Joseph went through seasons of frustration as well. His would have been so frustrating that mine pale in comparison: having to do homework or becoming a slave, rape allegations and prison. Tough choice.
But in the moments when we are challenged most, our determination to learn from these challenges, grow as a human being and use our newly acquired skill set to fulfill our God dream, that’s when we see His promise materialise in our life. Joseph received a God dream when he was 17 years old. The dream didn’t come to pass for 20 years! God took him on a long journey. He took it day by day, step by step. Knowing that God is teaching you something in a season is very different to actually understanding it. We can read something from a textbook, write it down, remember it for the test and then forget all about it once you’re out of the exam room, but God’s teaching style is for you to live it, remember it and for it to become part of your character.
When you are determined to walk in your calling, no matter what you face, God will equip you to fulfill what He has put you on the earth to do.
