Help, I'm A Parent!

DAY 6 OF 7

Introduction

No doubt, parenting comes with many challenges. These are often worsened by other problems like a demanding job, poor health, insufficient finances, and lack of support. Even the best among us can be negatively affected by these conditions, especially if prolonged. Hurt, anger, bitterness, and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness are often the result. If we are not careful, we inadvertently take out our frustrations on our children. But God’s Word provides instructions that should undergird our parenting, despite the challenges.

Pray

God, please help me to treat my children with love and respect. Help them know that I only want what’s best for them, according to your Word.

Read

Paul instructs new Christians on various aspects of their new life in Christ, including parenting.

Colossians 3:21

Reflect

Children are complete human beings made in God’s image (see Genesis 1:26-27). As such, they deserve the same dignity that parents do. Parents who recognize this are not likely to treat their children unreasonably—administering harsh treatment, condemnation, insults, or constantly scolding them. Doing these things will lead to what Paul says: “…they will become discouraged” (Colossians 3:21 GNT). Instead, we should “raise them with Christian discipline and instruction” (Ephesians 6:4 GNT).

Respond

How do you offer your children “Christian discipline and instruction”? Here are some recommended resources to help your younger children engage with God’s Word: Scholastic’s Read and Learn Bible (English and Spanish) and Five-Minute Bedtime Stories; Sergio Cariello’s The Action Bible (comic book form) and YouVersion’s free Bible App for Kids.

About this Plan

Help, I'm A Parent!

Parenting can be a rewarding, though challenging, process. Joy and sorrow, satisfaction and disappointment, sickness and health are part of the package. We often wish that our children arrived with a manual that tells us what to do, when, and how. No matter where we are on our parenting journey, we can turn to Scripture for guidance to help us get through the maze that is parenting!
