DAY 2 OF 50

Thy Will Be Done on Earth

Why are you in business? Don't rush to give an answer. Take a moment to really think about it.

If you have been a Christian for a while, you are more than likely familiar with the concept of purpose. Yes, you more than likely believe that God has a purpose for your life, even if you aren't exactly sure what it is, or that you are living it out.

But can we stretch that idea a little further? Do you not think that if God indeed has a purpose for your life, He would also have a purpose for your business? To think otherwise is to think that God's purpose for our lives is something we turn on only after 5pm weekdays, and on the weekends. That's even for people who have found the so-called, work-life balance; for the majority of business people, it's probably after 8pm weekdays, and on alternate Sundays.

That clearly can't be a correct understanding of purpose for one's life. Life can't be partitioned into the spiritual part imbued with divine purpose and the other part where we just try to make an honest living. If there is indeed any such thing as purpose, then it is either for all of our life (family, church, work, play) or none of it.

God has a purpose for your business. Or to put it better, God's purpose for some people includes being in business. This statement throws up two very important questions that you must answer.

  1. Is being in business part of God's purpose for my life?
  2. What is God's purpose for my business?

You should spend some time talking to the Lord about the first question because if the answer to that is “no”, then this is a good point to quit using this devotional and go find something that speaks more to where God is leading you. If you are unsure, however, or you strongly sense that God wants you to be in business, then it is critical to also seek God's face the rest of this week to get an answer to the second question.

It is critical to find God's purpose for our business because if we do not, we will find it difficult to align ourselves with the will of God. When the Lord teaches us to pray that “His will be done on earth”, it is so that His purpose be established. Where we do not even know His purpose, it is nigh impossible to be right in doing His will.

This week, as you dwell on the subject of purpose, expect that God will bring greater clarity to the vision and mission that your business must pursue.
