Mathew a disciple of Jesus, tax collector by trade, who wrote primarily to a Jewish audience, begins the book with the genealogy of Jesus. Mathew’s documentation of Jesus’s genealogy would be found significant to the readers. It clearly shows that the Messiah was a decedent of King David (Israel’s most prominent historical King), Abraham (the Father of Israel and the Jewish culture), while interjecting women and gentiles into the lineage leading up to Jesus birth. The birth of the Messiah brought a tremendous threat to Herod the Great (Roman ruler entrusted with leadership over this province). Herod was known as a ruler with concern for his image and be perceived as a strong ruler by building lavish architecture to display the glory of Rome.
