The Book of MatthewSample
Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”
(Matthew 28:18-20, The Message)
The story of Jesus’ death is one of the most famous events in human history. This week we read about the extravagant love poured out on Him by an unknown woman, the Last Supper, the betrayal and denial of Him, and His crucifixion. However, we know the story does not end there.
In chapter 28, two women go to Jesus’ tomb only to find that it is empty. An angel appears, telling them that He has risen from the dead. As they are on their way to tell the disciples, they see Jesus, and the narrative of the story changes once again. Now that they have seen Him, they enter into a new way a life: the life for which Jesus prepared them.
Matthew ends with the Great Commission. The disciples come to a mountain and encounter Jesus once again. He tells them that He has all authority in Heaven and on earth, and commands they go to all the nations to make disciples, baptizing people in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching about this new life. They are to make His authority known and evident in the world.
The very last verse reminds us that He is Emmanuel—God with us. We can go into the world and tell people about Jesus because He already holds all authority. It is His authority that sustains.
Some questions remain. What is next? What about us? The answer remains the same. We go out into the world. We tell people about Jesus. We hold tight to God’s promises, knowing that He is with us. We continue to pray, “May your Kingdom come.”
