Oh, Freedom

DAY 12 OF 20

I grew up as an African American child in a church that regularly celebrated the tradition of the Lord’s Supper. Being young in the Black Church and seeing the little wafers and the grape juice passed around every month followed by singing a soulful spiritual hymn, I didn’t understand at that time what this specific celebration meant. I just couldn’t picture in my mind why it was so important to continue this Christian tradition. Now that I know Christ by personal experience, I am aware of the importance of passing on the Christian traditions that I learned as a child, for future generations to remember and follow. I know it was His blood for me.

As I teach young students in Sunday school class or even my own children, I want them to understand that the continued celebration of traditions such as the Lord’s Supper represents a meaningful and lifelong freedom. Just as the Israelites were commanded to regularly and consistently remember how God freed then from the bondage of Egypt, we, too, must remember to honor and celebrate the freedom from sin that the Lord Jesus Christ gave to us by dying on the cross so that we can have eternal life.

Celebrations are meaningful for both the culture that we live in but most importantly Communion helps us recognize and remember our spiritual freedom from sin, given through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! -Parrish L. Hill
