DANIEL: TRANSFORMING THE CULTURE
READ: Daniel 6:1–28
Daniel lived after the kingdom of Judah fell to the Babylonians. Taken from his home and culture, he became one of several young men educated for the service of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. He quickly gained a reputation for wisdom, and after God showed him how to interpret Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (read the story in Daniel 2), the king made this exiled Israelite the “ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon” (Daniel 2:48). This was a powerful position in a powerful though idolatrous culture, but Daniel refused to compromise his principles over a career that spanned the reigns of several rulers. Today’s text begins after the rise of Darius, the third king Daniel served. Daniel’s enemies plot to ruin him, but God delivers Daniel from the lion’s den, impressing Darius and leading to his public recognition of the true God.
As we faithfully accomplish our work in obedience to God’s Word, God often uses us to transform and shape the culture around us. How does our text describe Daniel’s character and actions? How might the Lord use your faithful leadership to shape the military culture for God’s glory and the good of those around you?

About this Plan
The Bible doesn’t discuss leadership like a popular business book. However, since God is the creator of everything that exists as well as the rules and processes by which everything works, the Scriptures do provide principles and examples that give us insight and wisdom into effective leadership. The social and cultural backgrounds of the Bible are different than ours, but the Scriptures contain truth that transcends time and space.
