NEHEMIAH: INSPIRING VISION
READ: Nehemiah 2:17–20
Vision is sometimes described as a “preferred or desired image of the future.” Nehemiah, looking unwaveringly toward rebuilt walls, models how to cast a compelling vision. But an effective vision is more than a dream, and it cannot become a real future until it is shared with those who will execute the tasks necessary for its accomplishment. Teams will get behind visions that are ambitious and yet feel somehow attainable, visions they believe will make life better. Leaders must reiterate their vision frequently and creatively to inspire and motivate the team and keep it a touchstone for decisions and behaviors. Often the difference between mission accomplishment and failure for a military leader is in cultivating the ability to cast a clear and inspiring vision.
What are the elements of the vision Nehemiah casts for the people? What other challenges do we see in this reading that leaders might face as they execute a vision? How does Nehemiah respond? What fresh perspectives can you bring to help your team catch a vision you have?

About this Plan
The Bible doesn’t discuss leadership like a popular business book. However, since God is the creator of everything that exists as well as the rules and processes by which everything works, the Scriptures do provide principles and examples that give us insight and wisdom into effective leadership. The social and cultural backgrounds of the Bible are different than ours, but the Scriptures contain truth that transcends time and space.
