SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
- Jesus and the disciples are celebrating the Passover feast, which is a Jewish celebratory meal. During the evening Jesus takes time to wash each of his disciples' feet.
- In Jesus’ time people wore sandals, and walked on dusty, muddy roads, so their feet got dirty. Washing feet was usually performed by a servant, by the "least" of the group. And Jesus, God in the flesh and king of all, chooses to make himself the servant of all.
- Jesus then goes on to predict that someone (Judas) will betray him, and that Peter will disown him three times before the next morning. Both of these predictions come true that night.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
- After Jesus washes their feet, he gives his disciples a message: “you should do as I have done for you.” This doesn't just mean foot-washing. The idea is that we are to serve each other and meet the needs of others.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
- This is the second time we’ve read about this subject of serving others rather than ourselves. How are you doing at loving other people in this way? What will you do today to serve others?
