SAY WHAT? (What is the passage saying?)
- In verses 5-11 Paul counsels his readers to forgive and comfort a man whom they had punished. He tells them to do this so he wouldn’t be overwhelmed with excessive sorrow. This may be the individual that Paul was talking about in chapter 5 of his prior letter to this church (1 Corinthians). That chapter was about a guy who was sleeping with his mother (step mother?mother-in-law?). It seems here that the man was filled with sorrow after being expelled from the church.
- In the last verse of this chapter Paul states that he doesn’t sell the word of God. Instead he sincerely speaks the word of God for the hearer's benefit.
SO WHAT? (What are the underlying principles?)
- It is important to note that Paul tells his readers to forgive and comfort the man they had previously punished. Discipline for a follower of Jesus is not meant to be a final judgment but rather is meant to bring restoration to the individual's faith and relationships.
- In our lives we are constantly hit with commercials and advertisements. There are many people/companies that want something from us: money. But God doesn't want something from us, he wants everything from us. He wants us. Why? Because He loves us, and knows it's best for us.
NOW WHAT? (How will you personally apply this passage?)
- In today’s culture commercials and advertisements are a reality. Is a love relationship with God a reality in your life? What steps could you take to grow in relationship with God? Maybe sincerity in relationships is a place to start. If you have a relationship with God, in what ways do you trust him? In what ways do you struggle to trust him? Make sure to ask his forgiveness and continued involvement in your life.
