The Unfailing Love of God

“Sing to him a new song” (v.  3)—God’s people can sing anew, even with an old composition and well-worn lyrics. The song might be old, but the outpouring of God’s love is new every day, and it is this of which God’s people sing. God’s righteous rule determines the daily course of the world he created, from the waves of the sea to the kings of nations (vv. 5–10), and in it all, he works to the benefit of his own people (vv. 11–12). God not only knows everything that will happen—he has determined it, to the fashioning of every human heart (vv. 13–15). For that reason, looking elsewhere for security is futile (vv. 16–17). God takes special note of those who trust him, and he proves worthy of their trust as he rescues them from trouble and provides for their needs (vv. 18–19). Deliverance may seem far off and provision out of reach, but joy and hope abide in those who know him, because he proves again and again that he never fails his people (vv. 20–22).

The earth is indeed “full of the steadfast love of the Lord” (v.  5), evidenced most fully in the sending of his Son. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him” (John 3:16–17).
