Walking with God
Genesis 5:21—6:9
Two men listed in the early accounts of descendants of Adam are commended for “walking with God,” Enoch and Noah. For both men, their walk with God set them apart from everyone else. Their walk with God rescued them during evil times. God saw their righteousness and obedience. He honored them for pressing in and walking with Him when wickedness surrounded them on every side and the inclinations of mankind were evil.
Walking with someone conjures an image of a pace that encourages conversation along the way. To walk with God requires that we stay with Him, walking where He is going, at the pace He is moving, without taking detours of our own design. Sometimes I want to run ahead of God, sure that we are traveling too slow, feeling rushed by the needs and distractions of this life. At other times, I want to pull back to avoid being stretched by what lies ahead. But, ultimately, our God knows the right pace and the right path, and He wants to talk to us and listen to what is on our hearts. When we converse, we talk and we listen. This walk with God requires knowing what He is saying, and then obeying what He tells us.
How is your walk with God? Is it a two-way conversation? Take a few minutes today to sit quietly with the Lord. Share what’s on your heart, then ask Him to speak to you. Write down any thoughts or impressions that come to you. Ask for His help to faithfully walk with Him and to obey anything He may ask of you. Cultivate a regular two-way conversation with God, and you will experience a more intimate relationship with Him!
