Fight for Purity
Psalm 119:9, 11
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word…I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
Ephesians 6:17
“Take…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
When temptation comes, it is the Spirit of God within us who makes a way of escape. The Spirit of God brings to mind the scriptures that we have memorized and meditated on and he uses them to remind us of the truth of his word and our authority in Christ. The word of God is the “sword of the Spirit”. Just as Jesus resisted the devil in the wilderness by quoting Deuteronomy (“it is written…”), so also, the Spirit of God resists the attacks of the enemy in our lives. Our responsibility is to “hide” God’s word in our hearts so that it is available to the Spirit when we are in the battle. Purity is highly valued by the Lord, and it only comes as we resist the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil with the word of God.
Jesus, thank you for your word and your Spirit. Teach me to fight for truth and purity today.
