Running From The HeartSample
Solitude
Be still and know I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
Rebecca was always dipping into the book of Psalms and many of them are written out and underlined in her journals. Psalm 46:10 was one of her favorites and she practiced the discipline of solitude in order to be still and hear the divine whispers.
Rebecca had learned the difference between loneliness and solitude and she wrote,
“Celebrate the discipline of solitude.
Solitude leads to peace whereas loneliness leads to anxiety.
Solitude is enjoyable but loneliness is unpleasant.”
She was learning not to rush in and out of God’s presence; training herself to listen to the divine whispers through prayer and Bible study.
“I am thankful for this season: “He who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion.” He has pruned the areas of my heart that have been proud and deceived, misled, selfish, etc. There is a new peace in my heart and it will keep growing, I understand the magnitude of the sacrifice that has been made for me. God has been speaking to me this whole time and I missed so much.”
As an athlete, Rebecca would find a quiet place to be alone before a race. It was in the quietness that she thought through her tactics and gathered courage and strength for what was ahead.
Selah
Jesus often withdrew...for prayer. (Luke 5:16,NLT)
In the hustle and bustle, it’s all too easy to get distracted with the worries and noise of life. The enemy of your soul wants to rob you from hearing the gentle divine whispers... God is always with you; give yourself times of quietness to receive His comfort, peace and strength.
What are the distractions that stop you from intentionally spending regular quiet time with the Lord?
Passing the Baton:
Be intentional about spending regular time to be quiet with the Lord and to listen to the gentle divine whispers of the Holy Spirit.
Rebecca’s Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you that you teach me to come to you, to learn about being still, the secret of solitude. Thank you that you teach me that I don’t have to strive or do anything in my strength. Please help me to take time to turn off the noise in my life and to come aside to receive the comfort and strength that only you can provide. Thank you that in quietness and trusting in you, there is great peace. Amen.
