Every Word, a Reader's 90-Day Guide to the Bible

DAY 38 OF 90

  • God is just and merciful. Amos warns Israel that God will not abide their growing idolatry and rampant social injustice. How does this speak to our culture today? Amos preaches that God’s justice and mercy will come, but woe to Israel.
  • Note that Amos predicts a famine of God’s word (8:11–12). This alludes to the 400 years between the final word of the Old Testament prophets and the coming of Jesus, the embodied Word of God (John 1:14, Hebrews 1:1–2).
  • The aristocratic prophet Isaiah continues to speak God’s word as the kings lead the people into evil. God calls out their anger, pride, jealousy, and social injustice. Consider how this same behavior poses a danger to our spiritual vitality today.
  • The message of the prophets can begin to feel repetitive. Micah warns of impending judgment as Judah is going the way of Israel. Hear these warnings as God’s patient and gracious call to the people to come back to Him.
