ON TOP: YOUR GUIDE TO HOLISTIC SEXUALITYSample
The Mind
Sex is part of the larger term, sexuality. And when we consider the topic of sex we need to look at the big picture. A question often asked is why and how sex is more than a physical act? Sex is more than just physical because it has to do with our entire being. Your largest sex organ is actually your brain!
Specifically relating to sex, the mind controls our desire — including what turns us on or doesn’t. The mind stores our values, our upbringing, and experiences, hormones, and more. And so these aspects shape how we live out our sexuality.
So from the above, we can see that the mind is very important when it comes to sex.
Song of Songs 6:12 (MSG) Before I knew it my heart was raptured, carried away by lofty thoughts!
The first Scripture today, Song of Songs, shows the power of sexual imagination. Sexual desire starts in the mind! These thoughts pull the heartstrings!
In Days 2 and 3 we've considered what the purpose of sex is and the different aspects that make up human sexuality. Reflecting on that will help you have a healthy mindset when it comes to sexuality.
Have you stopped to reflect on what thoughts you are entertaining in your mind and how that is influencing your sexuality? To change the theme in our mind is a slow process — it takes one thought at a time, one day at a time. Scripture suggests that our thoughts and desires should honor God.
Reflect:
- Why do you think Song of Songs was included in the Bible?
- What major themes do you notice?
- In what ways do you think your behaviors impact your mind?
- Do you think your inner world (thoughts) honor God?
