Leadership Ignited

DAY 2 OF 5

Faith and Ambition

Ambition is an important ingredient in the fuel that ignites our leadership. Ambition motivates us to accomplish great things and achieve excellent results. It can also bring to mind those who are willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead – sometimes to the point of stepping on others and compromising their integrity.

In the parable of the talents, the servants who invest wisely hear the words we all long to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant … come share in your master’s happiness.”  (Matt. 25:21 NIV) “Well done” indicates that the results matter (Colossians 3:23). “Good and faithful” show us that how we get the results matters. We are to do our work with faithfulness and integrity. Finally, the word “servant” indicates that the posture of our heart matters. The parable tells us that we are expected to have ambition – to get excellent results with what the master has entrusted to us. But we only get the results He wants when we operate from a place of service and humility, working in a way that is consistent with His character and will.

God is not pleased with those who work for selfish gain. That type of ambition will eventually lead to a sense of complete emptiness. Godly ambition comes from a place of love, humility and a desire to serve. It motivates us to be willing to help someone who is struggling, and to sacrifice for the good of others. It motivates us to seek God’s will for our work and fills us with joy.

Faith and ambition are meant to co-exist at work, and that happens when your work is motivated by your love for God. Work done with holy intent seeks God’s will, demonstrates love for God and others, and submits to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please search my heart and reveal any offensive motives in me. Guide me to know your will, and give me the strength and courage to pursue Your purposes for my life in service to You, and to others. I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
