Jesus Is LifeSample
True Worship
Let’s go back to Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well, and today we’ll read John 4:16-26. Interestingly, after Jesus reveals His knowledge of the woman’s lifestyle of sin and brokenness, she quickly changes the conversation. She asks, “Where’s the right location to worship?”
We know worship in this world comes in many forms. In this case, the Samaritan people had mixed the Jewish worship systems with their own pagan worship. This was detestable to the Jews. The Greek word for worship is “proskuneo,” meaning to lean forward to reverently kiss, or humbly bow before. Yet, Jesus taught the woman even more about what real worship is.
Jesus said true worship is worship that is in spirit and truth. What do you think “in spirit and truth” means?
We know worship is not merely an external act or going to a church. It is not the location of our worship that matters, but it’s knowing who we worship and what He truly desires. You see, we can worship half-heartedly but still be far from God. Our Father wants us to worship Him with our whole hearts! He wants us to take the time to know the truth of who He is.
One thing is for sure, Jesus used the subject of worship to reveal part of His mission—revealing His heavenly Father. God is Spirit. He is omnipresent. That means He is accessible everywhere and can be worshiped anywhere, anytime.
The Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well was carrying a lot more than water jugs that day. And the way Jesus met her in the middle of her mess is truly powerful. He took time to notice where she was. He knew her and loved her completely.
This is true for you and me. Jesus knows our darkest moments and biggest messes. Nothing is hidden from Him. Yet, He loved us enough to suffer and give His life for us.
Today, be intentional in your worship to the Lord. Don’t let your sin or your past hold you back. Know that you can access God wherever, whenever. Talk to Him while you are at the grocery store, home with your kids, or at work. He is ready to listen. Get to know God every day. Read His Word. Pray. Fill your thoughts with His goodness. Let Him overwhelm You with His grace, truth, and love.
Consider:
What do you think caused the Samaritan woman at the well to change the subject?
What qualities did she recognize in Jesus?
What are some ways you can make worship a regular part of your life?
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I dedicate myself to worshiping You wherever I am. Give me a greater thirst to become closer to You! I desire to know You more. My heart rejoices and marvels at how wonderful You are.
