EZEKIEL 28-29:
So why were there two whole chapters against the city-state of Tyre in yesterday’s reading in Ezekiel, plus one more today?! I think we see the answer in Revelation. Tyre is very like the picture of Babylon (which in that book is a picture of Rome). All the way through the Bible— starting with the Tower of Babel, we see a contrast between the ‘city of man’ and the ‘city of God’. One day the world powers will be utterly defeated, along with all the wealth of commerce that supports them now.

As I said in day number 42’s devotional text, a few Bible translations follow the liberal side of Biblical scholarship in identifying Daniel the prophet as Danel, the Ugaritic mythical hero. This name came up in Ezekiel 14:15 and 20, and it appears again today in 28:3. As I said before, I think it very plausible that Daniel’s miraculous deeds (publicized even in the king’s proclamations) would have made him famous in that day. 

ISAIAH 10:
Yesterday’s reading in Isaiah included wonderful prophecies concerning Jesus that are quoted in the Gospels and in Handel’s Messiah:

Is. 9:2 NLT The people who walk in darkness
will see a great light.
For those who live in a land of deep darkness,
a light will shine.
6 For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

HEBREWS 6:

Jesus is our High Priest, not in the order of Aaron, but Melchizedek. This chapter picks up where the last left off. Yesterday’s chapter ended with the call for spiritual maturity:

Heb. 5:12b NLT “You are like babies who need milk and cannot [yet] eat solid food.”

Let’s pray.
Lord Jesus, thank You that You submitted to the Father’s will to be made ‘perfect’. You were already perfect as the sinless Son of God. But You submitted to the process the Father ordained to become totally appropriate as our sympathetic High Priest, including giving yourself up to be sacrificed as the Lamb of God. So we who walked in darkness have seen a great light.
We lived in a land of deathly shadows, but now light shines on us.
You have given us such great joy that it is like rejoicing at harvest time or after winning a great battle.
You have broken the yoke that was too heavy for us to bear,
and the rod that beat our shoulders.
You deserve the titles given to you, Lord Jesus,
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Having both right and justice on your side,
Your royal power will be victorious from now to the end of time.
It is our joy to come in prayer before You, who are our High Priest in the priestly order of Melchizedek.
