PROVERBS 22a:
Today’s highlighted verse from Proverbs is this:
Pr. 22:14 NLT The mouth of an immoral woman is a dangerous trap;
those who make the LORD angry will fall into it.
MATTHEW 2:
Most commentators say that the genealogy in Matthew follows Joseph’s line. You can find an interesting comparative display of the two genealogies of Jesus in the Wikipedia article entitled Genealogy of Jesus.
Let’s pray.
Our almighty Father God, we thank You for your sovereign planning that all came together for the birth of our Messiah, Jesus. In Matthew’s genealogy of Jesus starts starts with Abraham, but of course, as Scripture says, your plan for salvation was already set before this world was created. And here we see that You led Israel through three symmetrical periods of history. You carefully preserved David’s line because of your promises that he would always have a descendant on the throne of Israel. And in Matthew’s story we see hints that salvation that would reach beyond the Jewish people in the very genealogy of Jesus. Then Your name, Lord Jesus, both identifies You as our Savior, and links You with the man in history who brought the descendants of Jacob into the promised land. And Matthew quoted that enigmatic prophecy from Isaiah about your virgin birth and that You would be called Emmanuel. You indeed are God with us, and You are still with us. This Gospel will close with your word, “I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being with me and my listener today.
