Day Three
All Areas Growing
Scripture: Matthew 6:33
Although it may seem impossible to have all areas of our life growing congruently—areas such as spiritual life, work, spouse, kids, health, friendships, ministry, hobbies, social activities, and fun—it is possible and frankly necessary for a fulfilled and balanced life.
The foundation of having balance in life is always a healthy relationship with God. If that relationship is anemic in any way, it’s a no-brainer that every other area of our life will not function in its full capacity. In the balance game, any one area of our life going sideways can make most days miserable.
For example, if we don’t care for our health, we will live in a moody, mentally foggy state, lacking the energy and focus needed to accomplish what God puts on our heart. Or consider the effects of a relationship that is suffering, where both parties are discontent, perhaps just existing and dealing with life as opposed to winning in life. This kind of relational breakdown can cast a dark shadow over everything and everyone connected to it because we will look at life through the lens of pain and hopelessness. Life naturally cross-pollinates, all individual areas affecting the holistic reality of our experience.
One would think that life balance is something that takes discipline, and it does. But more than discipline, it takes faith knowing that God will honor our attention to balance. It is supported by his instruction throughout his Word to be a steward over all of areas of life in ways that glorify him and are an example to others. God knows that some areas of life can easily become idols. Our overattention or addiction to them can leave other areas ignored, causing a breakdown in those areas.
It’s best to see our life as rooted in a close relationship with our Lord. And it’s wise to accept that one or two areas thriving while others suffer brings nowhere near the fulfillment as when all areas are growing. Even if all areas may grow a little slower, the “all areas growing” commitment will leave little room for the enemy to gain entry to use any area of breakdown to taint the rest of life.
What areas of your life might be in jeopardy if you don’t make a commitment to strengthen them?
