Why should we share?

Over the last 15 years, a certain quote has become the evangelistic catch phrase of the Christian faith. It has been attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, and goes something like this: “Go into the world and preach the gospel, and if necessary use words.” Despite any evidence that Francis ever said this, many believers have followed this command, ceasing to witness with words and instead replacing it with silence. 

It may be that the popularity for this philosophy came from Christians who were accused of hypocrisy (being Christ-like on Sunday but not on Monday) and needed to learn what it is to walk the walk, not just talk. “I won’t say anything, I’ll just be a good person and hope that my friend can ‘see’ the gospel message by my good behavior.”

It seems that being a “witness” for Jesus without saying a word about Him has become the fundamental mode of missional living today.

The passages for today give us a different picture of a Christian’s life. Rather than hoping people notice his faith, the apostle Paul in Galatians 1 is clear that God has called him not just to follow Jesus, but to make His name known. His very identity as a believer is completely wrapped up in the mission of sharing the good news of Jesus.

Sharing Jesus is not incidental, it’s central.

The centrality of this is shown when Paul pleads with the Roman church, asking them how people will know about the power of God to save if they don’t open their mouths and speak. Speaking the gospel was never meant to be optional when following Jesus. It’s an overflow of our love for Him and His love for others.

Yes, people will see our good works and glorify God, but the Bible is clear that the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection is too good and too important to leave to guesswork. We must share. The love of Christ compels us.
