Be The LightSample
Walk
Last night I fell asleep on the couch after binge-watching Netflix and when I woke up the house was dark. I’ve walked the path from the living room to the bedroom easily two thousand times, so I decided to leave the lights off. Everything went great until my pinky toe slammed into the wall with the force of Thor’s hammer.
As I sat on the floor this morning nursing my purple toe, I realized: I do this all the time. Not THIS specifically, but this kind of thing.
I live my life with the lights out, thinking I have a handle on the world, that nothing bad will happen, and no one will get hurt. And without fail, I always end up stubbing my soul’s toes. And it always hurts.
John talks about this idea of walking in light vs darkness in a really cool way. He says that to walk in light means to have fellowship with each other, and to be purified from sin, but to walk in darkness is to pretend we have no sin. Walking in the light is about admitting we need Jesus and we need each other, but walking in darkness is about trying to do it on our own, thinking we have things under control when nothing could be further from the truth.
The world doesn’t change when we turn the lights on. That hallway was the same in the dark it’s been every time I walked down it. What changed was the way I saw it. That’s how it is when turn on the spiritual light in our life, too.
But it doesn’t happen alone. We walk in the light TOGETHER. Just like you need people to shine light into your life, your friends and family can’t do it alone either. They need you to help them walk in light, to hold them accountable, and to shine a light in the darkness when they think they can do it alone.
1. Think about your life. Who are you walking in light with?
2. What areas of your life are you trying to do it alone? Where are you walking in darkness?
3. PRAY: God, teach me to be real about the way I see my life. Teach me to walk in light and to be light for those around me. Illuminate your will in my life.
