Walking With Jesus

DAY 25 OF 40

Communion

Jesus instituted two holy sacraments: baptism & communion. Communion is also referred to as the Lord’s Supper, the breaking of bread or holy communion.

Holy Communion: This is a symbolic meal where Christian believers celebrate and remember the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. We have fellowship around this meal and eat of the bread, representing Christ’s body, and drink of the cup, representing His blood. Scripture is clear that we must use communion regularly and it should therefore not just be reserved for church services.

Self-discovery:

  • Thanksgiving and remembrance (Luke 22:19)
  • Confession and proclamation (1 Corinthians 11:26)
  • Covenant (Luke 22:20)

A covenant is an oath or agreement between two parties that cannot be broken or altered. It is also a personal testament or will. God made a covenant with His people on several occasions and has always been the One to initiate it.

Each covenant in Scripture has three important aspects:

  • The words / promises of the covenant
  • The terms of the covenant
  • The seal of the covenant

There are nine covenants found in Scripture:

  1. Edenic (Genesis 1&2)
  2. Adamic (Genesis 3)
  3. Noahic (Genesis 6-9)
  4. Abrahamic (Genesis 12-22)
  5. Mosaic (Exodus 19-40)
  6. Palestinian (Deuteronomy 27-33)
  7. Davidic (2 Samuel 7)
  8. New Covenant (Hebrews 8; Matthew 26)
  9. Everlasting (Psalm 105:10)

Action:

Invite two or three of your friends for communion and thank the Lord for the broken body and the blood of Jesus.
