DAY 4 OF 21

JohnBlog - Word&Light Day 4

Here Jesus’ credentials are elaborated in an astounding way. He is the source of all created things. It is repeated in the negative: ‘without Him nothing that was made has been made’.

If the Word of God is intrinsically communicative, then His entire creation is a purposeful message. All things made by the Word are a communication from God. Creation is God’s material communication. Look around; read God’s character. Like a poem, story, film or art exhibit, the gaseous clusters in distant galaxies, Himalayan peaks, oysters, catwalk models, sidewalk beggars, pain and happiness, suffering and searing joy all tell a story about the nature, heart and purpose of God.

Jesus is the agency in creation: the one who made it happen and continues to energize it. Once again, there is a hint of order in the Godhead: all things were made through the Word. Quite how this works we shall maybe one day find out but for now it is a delightful mystery: God the Father initiator, Jesus the channel. The hands. The creative mind. The master artist, scientist, inventor, builder, gardener, conductor, sculptor, potter. Singing the beauty of God and bringing forth a breathtakingly awesome physical universe.

The Lord:

Look around you my child. Read God. Worship. All that you see in my created order is a communication. Nothing is exempt. All can be learned from. Read nature. Read history. Read your own life. Read the lives of others. All that can be known about me is discernible in these runes. Read the accounts I preserved of my dealings with humankind. The account of my life on earth and all that preceded and followed it. And as you read, listen. Listen to what the Spirit says. For as you do, you will be filled with the Creator's spirit and you will be made new.

The Disciple:
How small has been my vision of you, eternal Jesus. At times, I confess, I have struggled to see beyond a stained-glass image of a crucified figure. Now I see that where you came from and what you have been doing since the start of all things is as much a part of your love-letter as your short life on Earth. I see now that those three brief years of ministry are but a lens through which to interpret what you have been communicating since time began.

About this Plan

JohnBlog - Word&Light

A meditation on John inspired by the 15th Century devotional ‘Imitation of Christ.’ In 2011 Chris Webster, a professor with positions at Hong Kong and Cambridge Universities, awoke from a 4 day coma. He started writing JohnBlog as spiritual instructions for his teenage daughter and son should he not return from a second cardiac arrest. This also tells everyone why he exuberantly loves life but considers death as gain.
