An Amazing Story
The life of Joseph (as told in Genesis 30–50) is a story of extreme highs and extreme lows that took him from being the favorite son, to a pit, to a prison, and finally to a palace.
What amazes me is how I can see God at work from the story’s beginning until its final chapter. But then again, I know how the story ends. I doubt Joseph considered his circumstances amazing as he lived it from day to day, wondering what was going to happen next. One day he was deeply honored by his father; the next day, he was betrayed, deserted, and sold into slavery by his brothers. One day he was promoted for doing great things; the next, he was punished for doing the right thing.
We all have moments when we wonder what in the world is going on. We cannot see the next chapter in our story like we can see the next chapter in Joseph’s story. So, let’s do what Joseph did: Let’s choose to believe God is working for our good in today’s situation, whether we’re in the pit or the palace. One day our children, or their children, or those who knew us best, will look back at the story we left behind and be amazed because they will be able to see how God was at work all along, accomplishing a greater outcome than anyone ever dared to imagine.
Take time today to tell God in your journaling about a situation that feels like a pit to you. Then express your commitment to believe that He is at work in that situation, and the outcome will be amazing.
