6 Biblical Traits Of A Godly DadSample
Day 4 The godly dad understands biblical discipline.
Bear Grylls said, “Our fate is determined by how far we are prepared to push ourselves to stay alive—the decisions we make to survive. We must do whatever it takes to endure and make it through alive.”
Before we can prepare for this battle, we must recognize that this is a spiritual battle. Some people don’t believe there’s anything else but what we can see and touch, but as Christians, we know there is much, much more.
We must be firm in the Lord, ready for anything. Most of us suit up for some type of job, and whether we put on a suit and tie, a uniform shirt, a pair of khakis, or a pair of sweats, we dress for the job we have.
What exactly is the full armor of God?
The belt, breastplate, boots and shield
Some of the spiritual armor we’re talking about is used for defense and some for offense. Some can even be used for both. But what’s important is that we’re prepared—prepared to use the armor God has given us to stand strong and protect ourselves, to move forward with God’s Good News into our world, and sometimes to do both.
The belt of Truth
What’s the purpose of a belt? To hold up your pants! Also to tie the armor together so there are no openings (“chinks in the armor”) that an enemy could penetrate. A person who tries to fight without a belt would be considered a fool. But when you have the belt of truth, you are wise!
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (Jn. 14:6). He is the truth. There is no foolishness or falsehood in Jesus. When we give our lives to Jesus, he comes and lives with us, and so we live in truth.
The godly dad seeks biblical truth and lives with integrity.
The breastplate of righteousness
What’s the breastplate for? It protects the vital organs, especially the heart. Our hearts are the most vital organs in our body.
Righteousness is a big word that simply means being right with God. Jesus made us right with God when he died on the cross for us. We respond to his sacrifice by living holy lives because we love him. Righteousness means our hearts are right with God and with others.
The godly dad guards his heart.
The boots
What’s the purpose of wearing boots? They protect your feet from getting hurt and help you move better and faster.
Jesus told his followers to “go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone” (Mk. 16:15). That’s our mission too.
The godly dad is ready to go with the gospel.
The shield of faith
What the purpose of a shield? It protects you from arrows, swords, and other weapons of the enemy.
Warriors sometimes use their shields as a weapon in hand-to-hand combat. They might use it to hit the enemy in the head with it, for instance.
The godly dad lives by faith in God.
