Thoughts on the Passage

Some prayers of Jesus are only for His followers.

That is a powerful truth that we need to think about for a while. There are powerful and great men and women that never get God’s special support. Simple men and women get special support from God when they acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God and their Saviour. Which camp would I rather be in? I want God’s support, no question. Here are some things that Jesus prays for us:

First, that God will keep (protect) us. In a world that hates Jesus, and will hate us as well, God watches over us.

Second, God blesses those who acknowledge Jesus. 

Third, Jesus asks the Father to keep us in unity. That does not mean we agree on everything, but we can walk together despite our differences. God helps us do this.

Fourth, Jesus asks the Father to carry on guarding us as He did.

Jesus prays this for the disciples and it applies to us today. When we face our challenges today, let’s remember that Jesus had a special prayer for His disciples. He asked the Father that the protection that He gave us when He was here on the earth would continue when He goes to heaven. Did that happen? Yes, because God sent His Spirit to be with us and to complete what Jesus did. So look at this prayer again…. Put your name in every place where Jesus speaks over His disciples and be encouraged, strengthened, and blessed. 

Application

Put your name in this prayer. Where does it encourage you today to be strong and faithful?

Put the name of a brother or sister you struggle with in this prayer. Unity comes when we see God having the same concern and love for that person as He does for us.

Time to Pray

Father, I have gone over this prayer and put my name in it. What a powerful and encouraging time that is for me today. It tells me so much about Your love for me. It tells me so much about Your blessings that belong to me that do not belong to the world. It encourages me to walk together hand in hand with others who love Jesus even when we struggle to be a united people. Father, keep me from focusing on what separates, even as we learn to be obedient to Your word. Keep me having the heart of Jesus for a lost world and broken people. Help me remember that Jesus did lose one – because that man allowed sin to take root in his life. Help me remember that even in Your children sin has great cost. Help me remember that even then Your love never stops. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
