Understanding The Book Of James

DAY 3 OF 5

James Chapter Three Overview

In this chapter, the apostle James reproves ambition. He also speaks openly against an arrogant tongue. He continues in the chapter to show the duty and advantage of bridling the tongue and being careful of what we say. He does so because of its power to do wreak havoc. James reminds us in chapter three that those who profess religion ought especially to govern their tongues (Jam 3:1-12).

The last few verses of the chapter speak about the benefits of true wisdom. James 3:13 - 18 give insight into how the wise will avoid strife. A person who is wise will also refrain from envy. Envy is such a commonplace occurrence in our culture today. It was also commonplace in Biblical culture. Thus, James lets us know that it is very easy to discern between spiritual wisdom and worldly hypocrisy. A person who lives according to spiritual wisdom will be content with his or her station in life, and the gifts the Lord has given.

A few points to note in this chapter include:

1. We are not to use our tongues in such a way as to show ourselves more important than others (James 3:1).

2. We are to consider the use of our words as a service unto the Lord, wholly devoted to Him.

3. It is absurd to use our mouths to both bless God and simultaneously insult others.

4. A wise person reveals he or she is wise through what is said, as well as through good works done in humility (James 3:13).

5. True wisdom makes itself known through actions.

6. An authentic believer who lives in a state of Godly wisdom possesses a spirit that is meek, kind and gentle.
