BIGGER THAN YOURSELF

I believe that deep down, NO ONE wants to live a meaningless life. No one wakes up and thinks, “man, I hope today is 100% average and nothing worthwhile happens.” No one wants to get to the end of their life and have nothing meaningful to show for it and no one whose life they’ve impacted along the way. No, that’s insane (and, if I’m honest, an exceptionally dark and depressing thought…so I’ll move on)!

But, here’s the thing: behind every world-changer, every celebrity, every historical figure we look back on and think, “that person made a difference” is a team of people – a tribe – that we rarely see or hear about. They didn’t get to that prominent status on their own…they were shaped, helped, or encouraged by people around them. If you want to live a life of significance, it WILL involve other people. 

Jesus Himself is actually a perfect example of this! No matter where you stand in your faith, it’s hard to argue against Jesus being the most significant Person in history. And, even though He was the Son of God (with all the power that comes with that) He didn’t choose to do His work alone. Jesus recruited 12 guys as His inner circle, and there were hundreds more who followed Him and shared in His work. And after His resurrection, He left them with clear instructions to carry on the work He had been doing all along. That handful of initial followers formed the Church, which quickly spread all over the known world, ultimately changing billions of lives for the next two millennia. Yes, Jesus’ death and resurrection for our forgiveness was a solo mission, but the work of changing the world was done in community. 

You and I have the opportunity to be part of that same mission that has been going on for nearly 2,000 years now. We can make a significant difference in the world by diving in to what God is doing through the Church. If you’ve been searching for significance through your own efforts, stop wearing yourself out because it won’t bring you true satisfaction. Jump in and work alongside what your church is already doing! You will be a part of the lives God is changing, and you’ll experience true significance as you become a part of something bigger than yourself.
